Wrist watch – their use is declining as people rely more on the mobile phone, but a watch will keep running long after a phone battery has died.

Pocket knife with: non-locking blade, scissors, wood saw, metal saw/file, pliers, tin opener, screw drivers, corkscrew, toothpick, tweezers. This is UK legal for EDC but will be banned from some places such as aircraft, night clubs, etc. Some people prefer a model with fewer tools.

Condom or zip lock poly bag – in wallet/purse?

Water purifying tablets – in wallet/purse?

Whistle – on a lanyard or key ring

Nylon cord – could have replaced shoe laces or draw cords in a coat or be worn as a bracelet

Ferrocium rod - on your key ring

An SD card or small USB drive containing scans of important documents, family photographs, and reference texts

If away from home add:

Street/area map of wherever you are

Miniature compass
